"Childhood is not from birth to a certain age and at a certain age. The child is grown, and puts away childish things. Childhood is the kingdom where nobody dies. Nobody that matters, that is."
    ---Edna St. Vincent Millay

  • Everyone called him Jonesy. He was the best athlete in elementary school at a time when that meant everything. He was the first kid at school to have a girlfriend and was one of the few to play spin the bottle (I was told). His girlfriend was the school's best female athlete, and a girl for whom I had a crush off and on for years (currently, off).

For my 10th or 11th birthday party (yes, bowling), Jonesy gave me - no fooling – the Rod Stewart "Do You Think I'm Sexy" album as a present. For my part, I didn't even have a record player, and I didn't really listen to music at all.

One day in 5th grade, the gym teacher asked Jonesy, me and a couple of other guys to stay after gym class while the other kids went back to the classroom. The gym teacher just wanted some help moving equipment, but Jonesy had this idea that it would be funny if we went back into the classroom limping and moaning, as if the gym teacher had beaten us up. And because it was Jonesy's idea, we did. Many of our classmates, upon seeing us, thought something had happened and believed our story about the gym teacher. Our 5th grade teacher did not. We got in trouble for that. But I don't think I was mad at Jonesy. I was just glad he included me. In those moments when I was publicly aligned with Jonesy, I was cool.

As time went on, Jonesy and I headed in different directions. We didn't have much in common, except that we could both proudly state we had never participated in Speech and Debate, not that there is anything wrong with that. Jonesy was no longer the great athlete, he didn't do terribly well at school, and he seemed to hang out more with the burnouts (Sorry Jonesy if this is not accurate. Maybe you will see this and correct the record, if need be).

But I always thought Jonesy was cool. And I think most kids did too. Even when we were no longer really friends, Jonesy was always good natured and friendly with me. Come to think of it, I don't recall Jonesy ever really being a jerk to anyone unless he deserved it.

And that's saying a lot. Don't forget him. Thanks Jonesy!

  • I just wanna know where the girls in the leather pants went to..DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDEA!!

  • Jason was the man. He had it all. Cool, had three gals on the line, (including the one I secretly loved more than life itself) smart, and, though he kept it hidden, an eagle scout in his spare time. I hung on his every word. He went off to Chico to study psychology, got into some trouble for exploring the inside of his brain with illicit substances and diappeared.

I tracked him down to Colorado many years later, and he was a Wiccan shaman. He weighed twice as much as I did (and I'm no lightweight) but still had gals lining up to be with him.

Some people live on planes of existence I will never comprehend.

    (BTW Fab art Eb!)
