Obama and the Inuit

Lots of noise this week about Obama and the former minister at his church. I’m pro-Obama, so I’m gonna see things through that filter, but I don’t think there’s substance to the issue. If O. hadn’t repeatedly rejected what Wright has said, that’d be different. But he has.
I think most of us like and associate with folks whose political views would look, um, unhelpful repeated over and over on TV. This hits particularly close for me, as many of you know. Heavy sigh.
I have this pal (let’s call him “Bill”). Bill believes that for several years now — since shortly before 9/11 in fact — Eskimos have been taking the marmalade out of these homemade marmalade jars he makes and replacing them with store-bought marmalade. Now, I didn’t choose “Bill” as my friend because of his ignorant theories about the Inuit. In fact, I’ve repeatedly rejected and denounced his statements.
But he’s still my friend.

  1. For the record, I heart the Inuit, and I denounce Cecil’s use of the antiquated and derogatory term “Eskimo.” But he’s still my friend.

  2. ok I have to step into this one…at my night club I have met two very cool Inuits, alan and audrey, they (seriously) brought me Moose meat soup and dried salmon jerky, after I poured them some drinks and we all became good friends. They knew how I felt about this country and the way things are, especially the joke of an election and their land being stolen. They also informed me that Inuits and Eskimos cant stand each other and have been at war for centuries. They are not friends. And I …I am not Obama’s friend when he sucs Eskimo meat ass with the rest of the jerkies

  3. jared diamond writes about the inuit. fascinating. everyone should read his book, ‘collapse,’ and pray for martians to save us.
the thing about this whole minister thing for me is, what about the wackjobs that mccain and the repubs associate with. their racist, sexist, homophobic, et al, spewed hatred is so pervasive, i can barely breathe.
so, read diamond. and, ready for environmental collapse. i just read an article in my zoo’s magazine about growing frog extinction, and we’re doomed.
