held with small fingers
slips of bone
sometimes lose their names
change hue
as six dead gerbils shade
to four black mice
as two turtles become a snake
and goldfish replicate.

There’s a strangeness in this that really appeals. Creepy pet death stuff shades into something almost upbeat–death as transformation? I don’t know … it leaves more of a feeling than a direct thought like that. I likes it!
sure, studies show that pets are good for child development, but have to say, not a fan of the major pets (dogs, cats), since i have always felt a disproportionate love out there for pets versus people. you love your pet, but not the homeless person on the street? just doesn’t make sense. but, fish do. and, my 21-month old son loves fish.
“This is part of the essence of motherhood, watching your kid grow into her own person and not being able to do anything about it. Otherwise children would be nothing more than pets.”
