One thought this happy night. I think this is (even) bigger than race. The pundits are underpunditizing(tm) this thing when they make that the focus. The impulse to support Obama comes from a massive hunger to stop the madness, to save this country, to tame all those hatreds, to learn the lessons of Bosnia and Serbia and Shiites and Sunnis, to dig deep and steer this raft away from the waterfall. We can hear the waterfall. We can see the spray. Dig deep.
OK, two more thoughts:
(1) Edwards’ non-concession struck me as make-me-wince delusional. “I won! I did!! Also: when I close my eyes I can make myself invisible. You can’t see me! Say, have you heard my stump speech yet? You haven’t? Awesome! Let me give it again then. ‘Stick it to the man!’ Woooo! Hey: I’m taking off my pants right now and you can’t even see!”
(2) Meanwhile, Clinton’s concession was gracious and wonderfully framed as a much (much) more credible “We all won.” She was personable and human and impressive. And then Obama gave his speech and stopped time and I felt kind of bad for Clinton. It’s not her fault that she’s not Obama. Most of us aren’t.
I have to laugh. Republicans will old office again. Onward Christian police state. Obama = Nader on steroids.
hil: “no wait, I’M the candidate for real change. seriously, i’m talking pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. yes, dimes! why are dimes the smallest coin? makes no sense. the iowa caucus makes no sense. this whole election makes no sense. vote hil. you can’t spell ‘children of the corn’ without hil.”
she is so right.
